Purchasing your first car will be very exciting. Many first-time car buyers do not know what steps to take after they purchase the car. If you have purchased a car in used condition, there are different steps that you will need to take than you would if you purchased the car in new condition. The following guide walks you through a few of the many steps you need to take after buying a used car for the first time.

Have the Emissions Tested

If you live in a heavily populated area, you may be required to take the vehicle to have the emissions tested before you can register it. If your car passes the emissions test, the mechanic will print off a form for you to take when you go to register your car. If your vehicle fails, the mechanic will tell you what is wrong with the car and you will have a specific amount of time to get the repairs done.

Get Insurance on the Car

In most areas, you need to have insurance on the car before you can drive it legally. When you get insurance, you need to consider if you need full-coverage insurance or if liability coverage will work best for you. If you purchased a used car that is not very valuable, you may want to invest in liability insurance because it costs less to get. If your car is badly damaged in an accident and you only have liability insurance, you will have to pay for the repairs on your vehicle out of your own pocket.

Register the Vehicle

Once you have had an emissions test done on the car and insured it, you will be ready to register it. You need to bring with you proof of the address where the vehicle will be parked at a majority of the time. You will need to pay fees to register your car and will need to keep the registration in the car at all times so that you can show it to officers when needed.

When you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to register your car, they will be able to let you know if there is anything else you need to do before you are able to drive the vehicle legally. Determining if there are additional steps you need to take could save you from having to pay fines and penalties in the future.
