Every truck and car has basic wear and tear on it that happens when you drive it each and every day. If you live in a particularly cold or snowy part of the country, there are some basic winter maintenance tips that you can perform on your truck to ensure that you have a smooth and safe ride. From checking your antifreeze to ensuring your tire's have enough tread, this article will discuss three basic truck repair tips you should do this winter.

1. Check Your Antifreeze

Nothing can put a damper on your day-- and your truck-- quite like having to pull over on the side of the road because your engine is overheating. If you are going on a long trip, make sure that you check on your antifreeze and make sure that you have enough. Your antifreeze helps regulate your radiators temperature so that it doesn't freeze. If you have never changed your antifreeze before, contact a truck repair company near you for help.

2. Check Your Tire Pressure

A decrease in temperatures can cause the pressure in your tires to decrease as well. Make sure to check your truck's tire pressure every couple of weeks-- especially if you are going on any sort of long road trips. To check the pressure, remove the valve caps on your tires. Then, take a tire gauge and press down on the valve to get a PSI reading. The PSI levels for every truck and car vary depending on the size and type of tire, but you should be able to find the reading either on the tire itself or online.

3. Check Your Tire Tread

If you are driving in the snow, ice, or rain, you need to make sure that your tires have a thick enough tread on them. Your tread is one of the only things that can help you get out of bad weather safely. To check your tire tread, try the penny test. Simply take a penny and place it into your tire's tread with President Lincoln's head at the top. If you can see Abe's head, it's time for you to get new tires, if you can't see his head, then you still have enough tread on them to get you through the rest of winter.

Winter truck repair doesn't have to be tough and stressful, but with the help of your local automotive professional, it can be easy.
